About

Charlotte-based Cine Casual is a media arts organization and the leading presenter of Latin American cinema in the Carolinas. Founded in 2016 as a blog with the mission of promoting and celebrating Latin American cinema, Cine Casual has now grown to offer an array of programs and initiatives throughout the year.

History

Cine Casual was born in 2016 out of a deep frustration—and an even deeper passion. Founder Giovanna Torres, an avid film lover, was disappointed by the lack of Latin American cinema available in the U.S. Determined to change that, she launched Cine Casual as a space for fellow cinephiles seeking access to the latest films from Latin America.

What started as a blog quickly gained traction, attracting readers across the U.S. and Latin America. From in-depth movie reviews to exclusive filmmaker interviews and festival coverage, Cine Casual became a go-to resource for discovering the voices shaping Latin American cinema.

In 2020, a Knight Foundation grant helped transform Cine Casual from an online platform into something even bigger—Charlotte’s annual Latin American film series, which captivated audiences and led to sold-out screenings.

Since then, Cine Casual has grown into a key player in the region’s film scene, collaborating with organizations such as the Hispanic Federation, Sundance, and MUBI, as well as local institutions like the Mint Museum, the North Carolina Museum of Art, Charlotte Pride, and the Carolina Migrant Network.

Through its diverse programming, Cine Casual doesn’t just showcase films—it sparks conversations, fosters understanding, and builds community. Whether through film festivals, outdoor screenings, or industry partnerships, Cine Casual continues to connect audiences with the richness and diversity of Latin American storytelling.
